Acronyms - IT people use hundreds of them and ConfigMgr is no exception.

Here’s a list of 'em (that relate to ConfigMgr) that you will probably see in the posts and docs on this site

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ConfigMgr or SCCM - System Centre Configuration Manager, WSUS - Windows Server Update Service, OSD - Operating System Deployment, USMT - User State Migration Tool, DCM - Desired Configuration Management, MDM - Mobile Device Manager, NAP - Network Access Protection, DP - Distribution Point, SQL - Structured Query Language (Microsoft's in this case), RBA - Role Based Administration, CAS - Central Administration Site, BDP - Branch Distribution Point

ConfigMgr 2012 - What's it all about then?

Well, now that it has an official release name I guess it’s time to understand whats different.
In a word.... Everything.
In a few more (more accurate) words .... 'Just about everything'
Below is a list of the stuff I think is relevant / important.

I will post more details on the items over the next few weeks as I get a chance to play with them

The Band:
·         The whole product is now very much user focused rather than machine focused.
·         64 bit only (except some BDP’s and share based DP’s)
·         Data is transferred with SQL replication rather than in/out boxes
·         New hierarchy model
o   New Central Administration Site (CAS)
o   Primaries can no longer have child primaries
·         The console is now a separate application and is not MMC based
·         Role Based Administration (RBA)
·         More Mobile Device Management (MDM) focus and not just WinMo either!
·         Self-service portal (not in beta 1)
·        User applications can, in certain circumstances, be installed on multiple platforms
·         Remote Control is back and is new and enhanced with CTRL-ALT-DEL!
·         DCM is now called Settings Management
·         Settings management allows you to monitor and/or auto remediate your rules.
·         Forefront integration
 ·       If you are an admin you are going to have to learn SQL administration and replication technologies - Now would be a good time to start J

Warm up acts:
·         Secondaries will need an SQL instance (can be express)
·         Requires a named instance rather than a default instance (currently)
·         DP’s can now be grouped and managed together.
·         DP's are now easier to interrogate. It’s also easier to discover what packages they are holding
·         Automated updates process where applicable
·         Operating System Deployment can now update off-line images
·         Applications can be set to auto re-install if removed (or auto un-install if installed)
·         Application ‘pre-flight’ and can be set with pre-requisites
·         USMT 4.0 is more exposed in OSD and easier to configure
·         Has intelligence built in to determine a user’s main machine
·         Hierarchy wide boot media
